About Al Aqsa Masjid
Al Aqsa Masjid in Mauritius is regarded as the birth-place and cradle of the local muslim community and is intimately linked with the history of the country. It is thus considered as the ‘heart’ of islam in the country.
As such Al Aqsa Masjid has been conferred the status of National Heritage as a religious and cultural site in April 2016.
The Site has also filed an application to be registered as the World Heritage of UNESCO through the Ministry of Culture: as such it is regarded as a ‘gem’ in the southern hemisphere.
