As such Al Aqsa Masjid has been conferred the status of National Heritage as a religious and cultural site in April 2016.
The Site has also filed an application to be registered as the World Heritage of UNESCO through the
Ministry of Culture: as such it is regarded as a ‘gem’ in the southern hemisphere.
It is a historical fact that Mauritius, an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean was first visited by Arab sailors[ Hence the name Dina Arobi – ‘Lost Island’ given by the arab explorers, as evidenced in the Cantino planisphere of 1502.
The country has thus developed initially through the maritime access.
In the same way Al Aqsa Masjid construction is intimately linked with the history of the muslim sailors who accessed arrival of sailors as far as the 1720s.

The name Al Aqsa also connects it with Jersualem, in Palestine which is the 3rd holiest place in Islaam, and the Centre of Bilaad-us-Shaam.
